Jefferson, Thomas:

  • U.S. President who bought the Louisiana Territory for the United States

La Vérendrye:

  • One of the first non-Indians to record a visit to North Dakota

Louisiana Territory:

  • All of the land drained by the Mississippi River and its tributaries
  • Includes the southwestern portion of North Dakota, which is drained by the Missouri River and its tributaries
  • More than doubled the size of the United States

Napoleon Bonaparte:

  • Leader of France who sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States

Pelts:

  • Hides with fur

Thompson, David:

  • Surveyed and made maps in North Dakota
  • Explored and mapped about 1.5 million square miles of North America
  • Is called the “Greatest Land Geographer of All Time”

Tributary:

  • River that flows into another river
