A Lengthy Constitution

hand written preambleHandwritten Preamble from the original North Dakota Constitution. - 31732

The North Dakota Constitution runs some 17,500 words—or nearly three times the length of the U.S. Constitution.  The style is similar to that used in other states.  Starting out with a “preamble,” which is a general opening paragraph, the constitution is divided into a series of “articles.”  The articles are major divisions of the constitution and are made up of subdivisions called “sections.”

The original North Dakota Constitution consisted of 20 articles which were divided into 217 sections.  The current North Dakota Constitution consists of 13 articles.
